Description
Suicide is a serious health problem. Although most suicide attempts happen outside the hospital setting, some do occur while a person is a patient in a facility. When this happens, it is considered a reportable Sentinel Event by the Joint Commission—a serious, and preventable incident. This activity will focus on ways physicians, nurses, healthcare staff, and hospitals can identify and care for patients at risk of suicide, keep them safe, and help them to obtain appropriate treatment and support.
Learning Outcomes/Objectives
Upon completion, participants should be able to:
- Maintain awareness of the potential for suicide risk in patient populations beyond those seeking care for behavioral health conditions.
- Implement strategies from your hospital’s policies and procedures on suicide prevention to provide a safe environment of care to patients at risk for suicide.

Cognition
Error in the mental action or process of learning can lead to adverse events stemming from inaccurate or incomplete thinking, perceiving, experiencing, recognizing, remembering and judging. Courses marked with this designation indicate that information presented within that specific education activity will illuminate actionable ways to improve analysis and synthesis of information, diagnosis and clinical decision making.
Communication
Misunderstandings can lead to adverse events arising from errors in written, verbal and non-verbal information exchange. Performance
